System Elements
We regularly implement custom interfaces to address specific design goals.
Such interfaces can be as simple as a ship's steering wheel replacing the standard Spin Browser dial, to an artwork where the evolution of time is proportional to volume of surrounding sound.
Any sensor inputs - mechanical, acoustic, pressure, light, temperature, magnetic field, heartrate, etc. may be used by themselves or in combination. The affect of a given input may be direct, or indirect mediated by sophisticated realtime simulations.
Examples From Past Exhibits
- Steering wheel: A nano-technology exhibit, Too Small To See ("Zoom into Nano") uses a steering to zoom in on various subjects.
- Interrupted laser beams and virtual physics: A "Skater Challenge" allows experiencing what it is like to be on ice. A stream of interrupted laser beam pulses, cause by a visitor's feet moving in a skating motion, are input to a TechnoFrolics-developed realtime physics engine. The simulation models momentum, friction, and foot-generated energy pulses, outputting a realistic temporal stream to a point-of-view video following a professional hockey player.
Hand cycle: access/Ability exhibit, allows visitors, handicapped and not, to take a point-of-view journey through a natural park.- Linear Slider: Users wipe back and forth to traverse a year of timelapse showing a man's hair grow in synch with flora in a garden.
